Fundamental Movement Skills

Fundamental movement skills are a component of growth and development for all children. These skills are broken down into key components for children to learn and understand. By giving children a wide range of physical skills, they acquire the basic building blocks for the competence, confidence and motivation to try many different physical activities and sports.

At Attack Sports, we believe that fundamental movement skills are a key component to help anyone become physically literate at any age. Our team helps our participants develop these skills in a competent manner so they are able to increase their confidence and motivation and ultimately be physically active for life!

Why is this Important?

Fundamental movement skills are very important to a child's physical development. When confident and competent in these skills, children can then develop sport-specific and complex movement skills. These skills allow children to enjoy sports and physical activities.

With a firm grasp of the fundamental movement skills, a child may enjoy a long life of physical activity.

At Attack Sports we aim to implement these objectives and goals through our programs for youth and adults. One of our mandates is to develop healthy, capable and resilient individuals through physical literacy and activity for life.

What are the Skills?

There are three categories for fundamental movement skills - ballistic skills, locomotor skills and manipulative skills. Each of these categories can be further broken down.

  • Ballistic Skills are the act of applying force to an object in order to protect it. Examples include kicking, overarm striking, overarm throwing, punting and sidearm striking.

  • Locomotor Skills are the act or capability of movement. Examples include: agility, balance, coordination, galloping, jumping, running, skipping and of course walking.

  • Manipulative Skills are where you gain possession or control of an object. Examples include catching and use of an implement, such as a stick.

What Does Attack Sports Do?

At Attack Sports we use fundamental movement skills as the foundation for our Lil' Attackers programs and implement many of these concepts throughout our youth programs. By emphasizing a multi-sport concept we use the fundamental movement skills as the groundwork for our participants to be able to compete and participate in whichever activity they choose whether that be competitive sport or recreational activity. Regardless of what is chosen, we want to encourage activity for life!
